Atlantic Beach anchors the eastern end of Bogue Banks on North Carolina's Crystal Coast, with lifeguards on duty April through September and a boardwalk-adjacent strip busy enough to feel like a real town center. It's an easy walk from the pier to the causeway bridge back to Morehead City, close enough that plenty of visitors come just for the afternoon.
Genuinely convenient, with lifeguards and easy parking close to Morehead City, though the crowd and the metered lots make it feel more like a day-trip beach than a local hangout.
How we score beachesLifeguarded hours end promptly at the posted time each evening. The crowd thins fast right after, and the last hour of daylight is often the calmest swim of the day.
Numerous public accesses have metered parking, generally $2 to $4 an hour with a daily maximum after several hours.
Most accesses are paved or boardwalk ramps straight onto the sand, with restrooms and showers at the larger lots.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the beach year-round.
Summer water reaches the upper 70s, alongside the same June through November hurricane season as the rest of the Crystal Coast. Lifeguards are only on duty April through September, worth knowing before an off-season swim.
This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.
The Circle
The roundabout at the foot of the Atlantic Beach Causeway, the social heart of the island since an amusement park anchored it in the 1950s and 60s. It's still the busiest, most amenity-heavy access on the beach.
Parking: The largest lot on the beach, about 300 spaces, with restrooms, picnic tables, and outdoor showers.
Local tip: Come early or expect to circle for a spot. This is the access every visitor defaults to first.

A quieter access on Ocean Boulevard, noticeably less crowded than The Circle, with a wheelchair ramp and a small playground near the lot.
Parking: A smaller dedicated lot with overflow parking along Henderson Boulevard.
Local tip: The wheelchair ramp and playground make this the easier pick for anyone with young kids or mobility needs.
