Barred Island Preserve
Deer Isle, ME
Barred Island Preserve, managed by Island Heritage Trust at the end of Goose Cove Road, is reached by about a mile of trail to a sand beach and a sand bar to Barred Island. The bar is exposed at low tide and covered by about four feet of water at high tide, so the tide table is part of the plan.
A beautiful walk to a tidal sand bar, but the beach is tidal only and crossing takes careful timing.
How we score beachesCheck the tide table before you cross the bar. Leave time to cross back before the water rises.
Park at the trailhead at the end of Goose Cove Road. Check Island Heritage Trust for current guidance.
About a mile of trail over mixed ground. Not wheelchair friendly.
Summer is the best time, though the water is cold. Fall is bright and quiet.
