Battle Rock Beach
Port Orford, OR
Battle Rock is a large sea stack connected to the mainland by a narrow, sandy ridge, right at the edge of downtown Port Orford and named for an 1851 clash between early settlers and local Native Americans. The small city park around it makes this the easiest beach access in a town otherwise built around its working harbor.
The easiest, most central beach access in Port Orford, well loved for the rock climb and views, though the town itself offers little beyond this one stop.
How we score beachesClimb the rock itself at low tide for a wide view up and down the coast in both directions, one of the better free viewpoints on the south coast.
Free lot at Battle Rock Park, right off Highway 101 in town.
A paved path leads to the beach; climbing Battle Rock itself involves an unpaved, somewhat steep trail.
Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach.
Summer, June through September, is driest for climbing the rock; low tide any time of year gives the widest sandy approach.
