Big Stone Beach
Milford, DE
Big Stone Beach is the one place in Delaware where houses sit close enough to the bay that waves break against their pilings at high tide. The homes here stand fifteen feet up on stilts at the end of Big Stone Beach Road, and the beach itself is narrow, quiet, and mostly used by the people who live behind it.
Worth the detour for the sight of houses standing right in the tideline alone, but it's a narrow, residential beach with nowhere to park and little reason to linger.
How we score beachesThis is a residential road with very limited turnaround space, so be considerate about where you park and don't block driveways while you take in the view.
Limited roadside parking at the end of Big Stone Beach Road; there's no public lot.
Beach access is informal, directly from the road onto the sand.
Same bay warming pattern as its neighbors up and down this stretch, comfortable by June and inside the June through November hurricane season that shapes storm risk for the homes here.
