Black Sand Beach, also known locally as Upper Fisherman's, sits below a genuinely steep trail in the Marin Headlands, distinct from the beach of the same name up in Shelter Cove on the Lost Coast. Dark volcanic sand and a dramatic drop from the bluff make this a memorable if demanding stop.
The dark sand and dramatic setting are genuinely memorable, though the steep trail and no-dogs rule make it a more demanding, limited visit than most headlands beaches.
