Brennecke Beach

Koloa, HI

SurfingScenic

Brennecke Beach sits just east of Poipu Beach Park, a short, steep stretch of sand known island wide as the best bodysurfing and boogie boarding spot on Kauai. The shorebreak here is powerful by design, punchy enough that locals bring fins and know exactly which sandbar is working on a given day.

One of the best bodysurfing beaches on the island by local consensus, though the same shorebreak that makes it fun has also caused a fair number of broken wrists and collarbones over the years.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Watch a few sets from the sand before paddling out. The shorebreak here is stronger than it looks, and knowing where the sandbar breaks makes the difference between a good ride and a hard landing.

Parking

The same lot serving Poipu Beach Park, just across Hoowili Road, covers Brennecke too, and it fills by mid morning most days.

Accessibility

A short paved path from the lot leads to the sand, though the steep beach profile itself makes footing tricky right at the waterline.

Weather & the best time to visit

Summer's south swells bring the biggest, most consistent shorebreak, exactly what local bodyboarders wait all year for. Winter is calmer here, sheltered as it is from the north swell that hits the other side of the island.
