Camp Ellis Beach
Saco, ME
Camp Ellis Beach lies at the mouth of the Saco River beside a long granite jetty off Surf Street. The village is known for its cottages and its long struggle with erosion, which has narrowed the sand. Waves break hard against the jetty, and the beach has a rougher, working shoreline feel.
It has real character and a story, but erosion has narrowed the sand and paid parking adds up on busy days.
How we score beachesWalk toward the jetty at low tide and look back at the beach and the cottages. It shows how much the shoreline has changed.
Saco charges hourly, permit based parking in season, and it is free in the off season. Summer restrooms are available.
Reached from paved lots with a short walk over sand.
Summer is warmest, but the river mouth keeps the water cool. Fall brings strong surf and good storm watching from a safe distance.
