Canal Park Beach (Lakewalk Beach)
Duluth, MN
Canal Park Beach, listed by the state as Lakewalk Beach, is the stony shoreline along Duluth's Lakewalk just north of the ship canal and the Aerial Lift Bridge. It's rocks and cobbles rather than sand, but it's the best seat in town for watching 1,000 foot freighters glide under the bridge. Restaurants, shops, and the Maritime Visitor Center are a short walk away.
The front-row seat for Duluth's ship traffic and Lift Bridge, though it's rocky and packed with visitors in summer.
How we score beachesCheck the Duluth Shipping News schedule and time your visit for a freighter arrival or departure through the canal.
Paid lots and street parking in Canal Park; they fill on summer weekends.
The Lakewalk is paved; getting down to the water means stepping onto uneven rocks.
Summer is peak season for crowds and freighter watching. In winter, sea smoke rises off the lake on subzero mornings.

Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
