Cape Arago State Park Beach
Charleston, OR
Cape Arago sits at the end of the scenic highway that also passes Sunset Bay and Shore Acres, with two small beaches, North Cove and South Cove, tucked below the headland's viewpoints. The Simpson Reef overlook just before the cape is one of the more reliable spots on the coast to see harbor seals, sea lions, and elephant seals hauled out in large numbers.
The wildlife viewing at Simpson Reef is a genuine standout, but the coves themselves require a steep trail down and back that not everyone wants to make.
How we score beachesStop at the Simpson Reef overlook even if you don't plan to walk down to the coves. The wildlife viewing from the parking area alone is often better than anywhere else on this drive.
Free lot at the end of Cape Arago Highway.
Trails and stairs lead down to North Cove and South Cove from the headland; the descent is steep in sections.
Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach, though pets are not permitted near the Simpson Reef viewing area to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Elephant seals are most visible during winter pupping season, roughly December through March, while summer offers easier trail conditions down to the coves.
