Cape Island sits inside Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, reachable only by boat from the landing at McClellanville, with more loggerhead sea turtle nests than anywhere else on the South Carolina coast. There's no development of any kind out here, just open beach, dunes, and the birds and turtles the refuge exists to protect.
The single best loggerhead nesting beach in the state is a real distinction, though it takes a boat and some planning, and there's genuinely nothing out there but sand, dunes, and wildlife.
How we score beachesBook a trip with a local outfitter out of McClellanville if you don't have your own boat. Scheduled crossings are the easiest way out, and the crew knows the tides and wildlife better than a solo trip would.

No paved paths or facilities on the island itself. Landing spots and walkable stretches shift with the tide.
Best visited outside peak turtle nesting season, May through October, when parts of the beach may be closed to protect nests. The same June through November hurricane season affects boat access along the rest of the Lowcountry.
