Carlsmith Beach Park sits between James Kealoha and Richardson along Hilo's Keaukaha shoreline, a calm cove and series of connected tide pools fed by cold freshwater springs that keep the water noticeably cooler than the open ocean nearby. Families favor it for exactly that reason, an easy, sheltered place to swim without much current to worry about.
The cold spring water and calm cove make it a genuine family favorite along this stretch of coast, though it's easy to confuse with its more famous neighbor at Richardson just down the road.
