Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach, FL

Cocoa Beach built its reputation on surfing, with the Cocoa Beach Pier and the original Ron Jon Surf Shop both landmarks locals use to give directions. Rocket launches from nearby Kennedy Space Center are visible right from the sand on a clear day, turning an ordinary beach afternoon into something else entirely.
Real surf history and the genuinely unusual bonus of watching rocket launches from the sand make it stand out from other Space Coast beaches, though the tourist draw of Ron Jon's and the pier means it's rarely uncrowded.
How we score beachesCheck the launch schedule before a visit if seeing a rocket go up is part of the appeal, the beach fills up fast in the hour before a well publicized launch. The dog beach area between 4th Street South and Robert P. Murshe Park only allows pets during set morning and evening windows, so plan around that if traveling with one.
Metered parking runs 2.50 dollars an hour, enforced from 7am to 7pm. Spaces near the pier and Ron Jon's fill first, especially on weekends and around rocket launches.
Most beach accesses are short, paved or boardwalk paths from street parking to the sand, flat and easy. The pier itself is a level, easy walk with ocean views the whole way out.
Leashed dogs are welcome in a designated area between 4th Street South and Robert P. Murshe Park, but only during set hours, 6 to 10am and 4 to 7pm standard time (5 to 9pm during daylight saving), with a 10 foot leash limit.
Winter brings the best surf, driven by cold fronts, while summer's warmer water and hurricane season, June through November, suit swimming better than surfing. Rocket launches happen year round, so that's less a seasonal consideration than a schedule to check regardless of when you visit.
