Deception Pass State Park

Oak Harbor, WA

ScenicFamily-friendly

Deception Pass State Park is one of the most visited state parks in Washington, 4,134 acres straddling Whidbey and Fidalgo islands with 77,000 feet of saltwater shoreline plus three freshwater lakes. It packs an unusual range into one park: Puget Sound's only significant sand dunes at West Beach, a sheltered cove at Bowman Bay, and ranger-monitored tide pools at Rosario Beach.

Iconic and genuinely varied, a dunes beach, a sheltered cove, a freshwater lake, and a tide pool beach all in one park, an essential stop for a reason.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

West Beach is the busiest and windiest stop. If a calmer, more sheltered beach day is the goal, head to Bowman Bay or Cranberry Lake instead.

Parking

A Discover Pass is required ($10 a day or $45 a year).

Pets

Dogs are allowed on leash, 8 feet maximum, but not in designated swim areas.

Weather & the best time to visit

Orca and porpoise sightings in the pass are most common May through September. The park is busy and worth visiting nearly year round.

5 Access Points

This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.

Quieter and less crowded than West Beach, with driftwood and views toward the bridge.
