Deep Creek Lake State Park Beach

Swanton, MD

Family-friendlyScenic

Deep Creek Lake State Park sits on Maryland's largest lake, a 3,900-acre reservoir in Garrett County ringed by mountains rather than marsh. The park keeps two separate swimming beaches, the main lakeside beach and a quieter one near the Discovery Center, so it's worth picking based on how much company you're looking for that day.

Real mountain lake scenery and two separate beaches to choose from set it apart from anything on the Bay side of the state, the tradeoff is a longer drive for most Marylanders to reach Garrett County at all.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

If the main beach looks packed, drive over to the Discovery Center beach instead. Fewer people know it's there, and it's just as swimmable.

Parking

A lot near the park entrance serves the main beach, with a per-person day-use fee collected at the gate.

Accessibility

A short, flat walk connects the lot to the main beach; the Discovery Center beach is reached by a separate, similarly short path.

Weather & the best time to visit

Western Maryland's mountain climate keeps water cooler than the Chesapeake, comfortable for swimming by July and August. Winters here bring real snow, and the lake itself can partially freeze, a different world from the state's coastal beaches.

2 Access Points

This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.

Main Lake Beach

The park's primary swimming beach, closest to the entrance and generally the busier of the two.

Parking: The main park lot near the entrance.

Discovery Center Beach

A quieter beach near the park's Discovery Center nature exhibits, with noticeably less foot traffic than the main beach.

Local tip: Pair a swim here with a stop inside the Discovery Center itself, worth doing even with kids who'd rather be in the water.
