Devil's Churn
Yachats, OR
Devil's Churn is a narrow slot cut into the basalt cliffs of Cape Perpetua, where incoming waves get squeezed into the gap and blast upward with real force, especially during winter storms and around high tide. A short trail from the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area leads right to the viewpoint above the churn.
A genuinely dramatic natural feature during the right tide and weather window, but it's a viewpoint, not a beach, so it's a stop rather than a full day.
How we score beachesGo within an hour of high tide, ideally during a winter storm, for the churn at its most dramatic. At low tide or calm seas it's a much quieter show.
Free lot at the Devil's Churn wayside off Highway 101, part of the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area.
A short paved and gravel path leads to viewpoints above the churn; there's no sand beach to walk on here.
Winter storm season, November through February, brings the churn's most powerful displays, timed around high tide for the best effect.
