Ediz Hook
Port Angeles, WA
Ediz Hook is a three mile natural sand spit that curls out to enclose Port Angeles Harbor, part working waterfront and part beachcombing walk. The paved Olympic Discovery Trail runs the first two miles before the final stretch turns into Coast Guard base and closes to the public.
Free, scenic, and genuinely popular with local walkers and cyclists, though the log booms and Coast Guard base keep it feeling like a working harbor more than a classic beach.
How we score beachesWalk or bike the trail rather than driving to the end. There isn't much parking past the base gate anyway, and the views of the Olympics and Victoria across the strait are better on foot.
Free parking at several points along the spit, open sunrise to sunset.
The Olympic Discovery Trail is paved and flat, wheelchair and stroller friendly. The beach itself is gravel and cobble.
Year round for walking. Summer is the most comfortable for lingering on the beach itself.
