Ehukai Beach Park fronts the Banzai Pipeline, arguably the most famous wave in surfing, a hollow, reef bottomed barrel that draws the sport's best names every winter. Summer flips the script entirely. The water goes flat and forgiving enough for an easy family swim in front of the same break that terrifies pros come December.
Watching Pipeline in winter is a real Oahu institution, and the summer swimming is a pleasant surprise, but winter parking and crowds around contest days are a lot to deal with.
How we score beachesWinter viewing is best from the beach itself rather than in the water. The wave and the crowd of surfers competing for it are not beginner friendly in any sense.
A small lot and roadside parking serve the beach off Ke Nui Road, both fill fast during winter surf season.
A short, flat sandy path connects the lot to the beach, no stairs.
