False Bay
San Juan Island, WA
False Bay is a large, shallow bay that nearly empties at low tide, exposing a wide stretch of mudflat managed for research by the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Labs. It's part of San Juan Islands National Monument, and it's less a swim beach than a genuine tide pooling and shorebird spectacle.
A real, publicly accessible naturalist destination that locals value for the dramatic tidal drawdown, though it's a niche stop rather than a typical beach day.
How we score beachesGo at low tide and low tide only; that's when the bay actually reveals what makes it worth the trip. At high tide there's little to see.
Informal roadside parking off False Bay Road, no developed lot or restroom.
Any season works if the tide is right. Shorebird migration in spring and fall adds another reason to visit.
