Flag Ponds Nature Park Beach
Lusby, MD
Flag Ponds pairs a sandy Chesapeake beach with freshwater ponds and a wetlands boardwalk just inland, all set beneath a stretch of the same Calvert Cliffs that make this coast famous for fossils. It's as much a nature park as a beach, with trails and an observation pier pulling as many hikers and birders as swimmers.
The combination of real cliffs, ponds, and beach in one park is hard to match nearby, though the walk in is longer than most people expect from a beach visit.
How we score beachesThe walk from the parking area to the beach is close to a mile through the woods and past the ponds, so budget the time and bring water.
A lot at the park entrance off MD Route 2/4, with a small per-person fee collected at the gate.
A flat, forested trail of roughly three quarters of a mile connects the lot to the beach, not a direct drive-up beach.
Water reaches the mid 70s by August, with the cliffs and fossil hunting drawing visitors well beyond swim season. Spring and fall bring the best birding along the wetlands boardwalk.
