Fort Clinch State Park

Fort Clinch State Park anchors the northern tip of Amelia Island, a still mostly intact Civil War era fort beside miles of hard packed Atlantic sand firm enough to ride a fat tire bike on at low tide. Rangers in period uniform lead tours through the fort's brick corridors, and the beach itself stretches quiet and wide well past the fort's shadow.
A real, well preserved fort and miles of firm, bikeable sand give it more to do than a typical beach day, though the added fort fee and the no-pets beach rule are worth planning around.
How we score beachesRent one of the large tire bikes if you want to ride the packed sand at low tide, it's a different way to see miles of beach most people only walk. Pair the beach with a fort tour, ranger-led walks through the brick corridors run daily and add real context to what's otherwise just an old wall.
The entrance fee is 6 dollars per vehicle for two to eight people, 4 dollars for a single occupant, 2 dollars for pedestrians or cyclists, plus a separate 2.50 dollar fort admission per person. Parking is plentiful across the park's lots.
Paved paths lead from the main lots to the beach, mostly flat. The fort's interior has uneven brick floors and stairs, not stroller or wheelchair friendly throughout.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the hiking trails, park drive, and campground, but pets aren't allowed on the beach or in the fort.
Spring and fall bring the mildest weather for both the fort tour and the beach walk, while summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, make midday visits tougher. Winter here can turn genuinely cold and windy for a Florida beach.
