Fort Fisher State Recreation Area Beach
Kure Beach, NC
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area sits just south of Kure Beach, wrapped around the earthwork remains of the Confederate fort that once guarded Wilmington's shipping lanes during the Civil War. The beach here is less developed than the towns up the road, backed by dune and marsh instead of houses.
The Civil War history and the less developed shoreline set it apart from the towns further up the peninsula, though the swim beach's no-dog rule sends pet owners to the rest of the park instead.
How we score beachesThe lot fills by 10am on a summer Saturday, earlier than you'd expect for how far south this is. Come first thing or plan around the crowd.
A large state park lot near the exhibit hall and park office is free, though it fills by 10am on summer Saturdays.
A paved path leads from the lot toward the swim beach, with a changing area and foot rinses nearby.
Leashed dogs (6 feet max) are welcome throughout the park, but not on the swim beach itself or inside any buildings.
Water reaches the upper 70s by August, alongside the same June through November hurricane season as the rest of the Cape Fear coast. The historic site and nature trails make it a worthwhile stop even outside swimming season.
