Fort Macon State Park Beach

Atlantic Beach, NC

Family-friendlyHistoricScenic

Fort Macon State Park occupies the eastern tip of Bogue Banks, where a restored 1830s brick fort shares the grounds with a genuinely good swimming beach and a network of nature trails. Day use is free, a rarity for a beach this well kept and this close to the middle of the Crystal Coast.

Free admission, a real fort to explore, and a genuinely good beach all in one stop is hard to beat this far up Bogue Banks, though the no-dog swim beach rule means leaving pets to the trails.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Tour the fort itself before or after the beach. It's a real, walkable Civil War era fortification, not a roped-off ruin, and it's included at no extra cost.

Parking

Free day use parking, no admission or parking fee.

Accessibility

Paved paths lead from the lot to the swim beach and bathhouse. The fort itself has stairs and uneven brick surfaces in places.

Pets

Leashed dogs (6 feet max) are welcome on the park's trails, but not on the swim beach or inside the fort and bathhouse.

Weather & the best time to visit

Water reaches the upper 70s by August, during the same hurricane season, June through November, that affects the rest of the Crystal Coast. The fort and trails make this a real year-round destination, not just a summer one.
