Good Harbor Bay Beach
Glen Arbor, MI
Good Harbor Bay Beach is a long, gentle crescent in the northern part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, reached at the ends of County Roads 651 and 669. It feels a world away from Glen Haven's crowds. Pyramid Point and the Manitou Islands sit on the horizon, and the sand stretches for miles in both directions.
Miles of quiet sand with island views, though the small lots and lack of facilities keep it simple.
How we score beachesPick your road based on your dog. Pets are allowed on only one side of each access, and the sides are opposite at each road.
A National Lakeshore park pass is required; there are small lots at the ends of CR 651 and CR 669.
Short sandy paths lead from each lot to the beach.
Leashed pets are allowed to the right of CR 651 and to the left of CR 669 when facing the water.
Sunsets here run late in June and July, well after 9. By September the water still holds some warmth and the beach is nearly empty.
This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Beach
Empire, MI · Great Lakes
Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
