Gooseberry Falls State Park (Agate Beach)
Two Harbors, MN
Agate Beach is the pebble beach at the mouth of the Gooseberry River in Gooseberry Falls State Park, below the park's famous stepped waterfalls. A trail follows the river from the falls down to the lake, where the stones are smooth, flat, and perfect for skipping. It's the most visited state park on the North Shore.
Waterfalls and a pebble beach in one park, though it's the busiest stop on the North Shore.
How we score beachesSee the falls first, then follow the river trail down to the lake for a quieter spot on the stones.
A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required.
Paved paths lead to the falls; the trail down to the river mouth is rougher.
The falls are loudest in spring snowmelt. Summer crowds are heavy; fall color peaks in late September.

New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel.
