Grand Marais Downtown Beach
Grand Marais, MN
Grand Marais Downtown Beach is the harbor beach in downtown Grand Marais, sheltered behind the breakwater and a few steps from the village's shops, galleries, and fish houses. Across the harbor, a spit of land leads to Artist's Point, a wooded rocky island with pebble coves, and a concrete breakwater runs out to the white 1885 Grand Marais Lighthouse.
The heart of the North Shore's favorite town, with a lighthouse and Artist's Point, though it's busy in summer.
How we score beachesWalk out to Artist's Point and the lighthouse breakwater at sunset, then grab dinner in town.
Street and public lot parking downtown; it fills on summer weekends.
The downtown beach is a short walk from the street; Artist's Point is uneven rock.
The harbor is calmer than the open lake, the best spot in town for a quick dip on a hot day. Fall color weekends and the summer arts festival draw big crowds.
This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.
Artist's Point
A wooded, rocky point with pebble coves and open-lake views, next to the lighthouse breakwater.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Beach
Empire, MI · Great Lakes
Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
