Grape Island Beach
Hingham, MA
Grape Island is a 101 acre Boston Harbor island in Hingham Bay with rocky beaches, wild berries, wooded trails, campsites, and two freshwater springs. Ferries reach it in season, and the island has composting toilets only, so it feels like a small wild place a short ride from the mainland.
A quiet, wooded harbor island with rocky beaches and camping, though the ferry logistics and lack of shops make it a planned trip.
How we score beachesCome in late summer, when the berries are ripe along the trails. Bring everything you need, since there are no shops or fresh water on the island.
Reached by ferry in season, including from Hingham Shipyard in July and August. There is no parking on the island.
Ferry and dock access, then trails and uneven ground to the shore. Composting toilets are on the island.
Ferries run May through October. Late summer brings the best light and berry picking along the trails.
