Hatteras Village sits at the southern tip of Hatteras Island, the last stop before the free ferry to Ocracoke and home to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, named for the hundreds of shipwrecks scattered off this stretch of coast. It's a real working fishing village first, a beach town second.
A genuine working fishing village with real maritime history in the shipwreck museum, though it's more of a through point to Ocracoke for a lot of visitors than a destination on its own.
How we score beachesTime your visit around the ferry schedule if you're continuing on to Ocracoke. The crossing takes about an hour, and the lot at the terminal has 110 spaces on a first come basis.
Free parking at NPS beach accesses throughout the village, plus 110 spaces (5 overnight) at the ferry terminal.
Most accesses are boardwalk or sand path crossings over the dune, typical of the seashore's beach accesses.
Leashed dogs (6 feet max) are welcome on the beach, and on the Ocracoke ferry, per National Park Service and NCDOT rules.
Water reaches the upper 70s by August, during the same June through November hurricane season as the rest of the Outer Banks. Being the departure point for the Ocracoke ferry means boat traffic and ferry schedules shape the village's rhythm more than tourist season does.
