Higgins Beach
Scarborough, ME
Higgins Beach is a neighborhood beach in Scarborough with a loyal surf crowd and a long sweep of sand backed by shingled cottages. The Spurwink River runs along one end. The beach is small enough that beginners and regulars share the same break, and everyone seems to know each other.
Reliable surf and a close knit beach community make this a local favorite, though the parking limits are a real headache.
How we score beachesSurf early in the morning, before the parking fills. Keep clear of the river mouth, where currents get strong.
Parking is tight and restricted in summer. Check current town rules and expect to arrive early.
A short walk from street ends to soft sand. Not wheelchair friendly.
Summer is the busy season, and fall often brings the best swell and fewer people. The water stays cold, so a wetsuit is common.
