Hobie Island Beach Park
Virginia Key, FL

Hobie Island Beach Park, better known locally as Windsurfer Beach, faces Biscayne Bay rather than the open Atlantic, keeping the water shallow, warm, and calm enough for beginner kiteboarders and windsurfers to practice close to shore. It's one of the most genuinely dog-friendly beaches in Miami, with a section where dogs run off-leash right in the sand.
The genuine off-leash dog access and reliable wind for water sports make it a real local favorite, though the shallow bay water and lack of real facilities keep it more a specialty spot than an all day beach destination.
How we score beachesSkip the more crowded pull-offs closer to the causeway entrance and continue a bit further if parking looks tight, roadside spots stretch along the whole strip. Come midweek if possible, weekends bring out both the windsurfing crowd and the dog crowd at the same time.
Parking is free at roadside pull-offs along the causeway, though spots fill fast on weekends.
The beach is reached directly from roadside parking, flat and easy, no boardwalk needed given the low profile of this stretch.
Dogs are welcome, with a designated section allowing off-leash play right on the sand, waste stations provided.
Steady winds make this a year round windsurfing and kiteboarding spot, with winter cold fronts often producing the best conditions. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, still leave the shallow bay water warm.
