P.H. Hoeft State Park
Rogers City, MI
P.H. Hoeft State Park is a 340 acre state park on Lake Huron just north of Rogers City, with about a mile of soft sand backed by wooded dunes. It's one of the prettiest sand beaches on the Sunrise Coast. A paved bike path runs past the park, into Rogers City one way and up the shore the other.
A mile of soft, uncrowded sand on a coast that's often rocky, the only knock is chilly water well into July.
How we score beachesBike the paved path into Rogers City for lunch, then ride back for an afternoon on the sand.
A Michigan Recreation Passport (or nonresident pass) is required.
Short paths through the wooded dunes lead from the lot to the beach.
Northern Lake Huron takes its time warming, so late July and August are the swim weeks. The dune forest is gorgeous in early October color.

New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
