Honokohau Bay

Honokohau Bay marks the far northern edge of West Maui's developed coast, a rugged, boulder lined bay backed by steep cliffs rather than the sand and condos found further south. Surfers work a reliable reef and point break here through the winter, while most other visitors are content to watch the waves crash from the small roadside lot above.
A genuine winter surf spot for locals with the skill to handle a rocky bottom and real current, but it offers almost nothing for anyone hoping to swim or sunbathe.

A small dirt lot off Honoapiilani Highway near mile marker 36 serves the bay, free and informal, with limited space.
A short, uneven path leads from the lot to a boulder and rock shoreline, not suited to strollers, wheelchairs, or casual bare feet.
Winter is the season that matters here, bringing the reliable surf that draws locals, while summer is calmer and quieter.
