Hopkins sits on Belize's southern coast in Stann Creek district, a Garifuna village with three miles of sandy beach split into a northern and southern side. Founded in 1942 after a hurricane destroyed the previous settlement further up the coast, the village has since become a cultural center for Belize's Garifuna community, drawing visitors as much for the food and drumming as for the sand.
A genuinely rich cultural experience layered onto a long, easy beach, though the surrounding barrier reef and jungle attractions mean most visitors treat the beach as one part of a bigger stay rather than the sole draw.
Time a visit around Garifuna cultural events if possible, since the drumming and food traditions here are as much the draw as the beach, and locals are generally happy to explain the history to visitors who ask.
Hopkins is reached by road from Dangriga or Placencia, with informal parking throughout the village and along the beachfront.
The beach is flat and easy to walk for its full three mile length, with no boardwalk but generally firm, easy sand.
The dry season from late November through May brings the most reliable sunny weather, while the wetter season from June through November carries Caribbean hurricane season risk for this part of Belize.

The town holds around 300 full time residents, though visitor numbers climb sharply during Semana Santa and Christmas, and jungle covered hills rise up on either side of the bay.
