Indian Head Cove (Bruce Peninsula National Park)
Tobermory, ON, Canada
Indian Head Cove sits next to The Grotto in Bruce Peninsula National Park, near Tobermory, Ontario, a white boulder beach on flat limestone shelves above startlingly clear Georgian Bay water. It's about a half-hour walk from the Cyprus Lake trailhead. The water is icy and the rocks are hard going, but the colour of the bay here is unlike anywhere else in the province.
Some of the clearest water in the Great Lakes, though parking is reservation-only and summer crowds are heavy.
How we score beachesReserve Cyprus Lake parking well ahead, bring water shoes, and arrive early before the ledges fill with people.
Parking at Cyprus Lake requires a Parks Canada reservation from late April to the end of October.
An easy 30 minute trail from the Cyprus Lake lots, then uneven boulders and limestone ledges at the water.
July and August are busiest, and the water stays very cold. Spring and fall are quieter but just as clear.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Beach
Empire, MI · Great Lakes
Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
