Janes Island State Park Beach
Crisfield, MD
Janes Island is nearly 3,000 acres of salt marsh next to Crisfield, with swimming allowed only on the Tangier Sound side of the island, reachable by boat. Over 30 miles of marked water trails wind through the marsh, so most visitors treat the beach as one stop on a longer paddling trip rather than the whole point of the visit.
A genuinely wild, boat-only beach inside one of the state's biggest marsh systems, the tradeoff being you need your own boat or a rental to ever set foot on the sand.
How we score beachesRent a kayak or canoe from the camp store if you don't have your own boat. Without one, there's no way to reach the swimming side of the island at all.
A mainland lot near the camp store serves paddlers launching toward the island; the swim beach itself has no vehicle access.
Reaching the beach requires a paddle or boat trip across open water; there is no walk-in or drive-up option.
Water warms into the mid 70s by August, calmer on the sound side than the open Bay. Marsh mosquitoes are worst in late spring and early summer, so many locals prefer a fall paddle.
