Joni's Beach
La Pointe, WI
Joni's Beach is a small town park on Main Street in La Pointe, a few blocks from the Madeline Island ferry landing. There's a sandy beach, a covered picnic area, restrooms, and a sandbox and play area for toddlers. It faces west across the channel toward Bayfield, so sunsets are the main event.
A sweet little sunset beach steps from the ferry, though it's tiny.
How we score beachesWalk here straight off the ferry if you don't have a car on the island. It's the closest beach to the landing.
Street parking along Main Street; no camping or overnight parking.
A short, flat walk from the street to the sand.
Summer evenings are best, when the sun sets behind Bayfield across the channel. The island is quiet by mid October.

Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park

Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
