Kadunce Creek Beach
Grand Marais, MN
Kadunce Creek Beach sits at the Kadunce River Wayside on Highway 61, about nine miles northeast of Grand Marais, where the creek spills out of a narrow gorge into Lake Superior. The creek drops about 300 feet in its last mile. A short trail climbs along the rim of the slot-like gorge, and the pebble beach at the mouth is a good place to hunt for stones.
A gorgeous little gorge and pebble beach right off the highway, though the lot is small.
How we score beachesHike the gorge trail; in low water you can wade up the creek into the narrow canyon.
Free parking at the wayside.
A short walk to the beach; the gorge trail is rooty and steep in spots.
The creek runs high in spring. Low water in late summer is best for exploring the gorge.

New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
