Kahala Beach

Kahala Beach fronts one of Honolulu's most exclusive neighborhoods, a long, quiet stretch of sand between the Kahala Hotel's lagoon and Wailupe. The water stays glassy behind an offshore reef, and it's common to see a monk seal hauled out on the sand or a turtle gliding past the hotel's fish pond in the early morning.
Beautiful and usually empty, but access has been a genuine, ongoing dispute between the neighborhood, the hotel, and the public, so don't expect obvious signage pointing you in.
How we score beachesPublic access holds even in front of the hotel. Walk the sand along the shoreline rather than cutting through hotel grounds, and you'll find a quieter stretch just past the pool deck.
Street parking along Kahala Avenue is the main option, limited and residential, so arrive early and park considerately.
Several public shoreline access paths cut between the homes along Kahala Avenue down to flat sand, none of them signed loudly, so it helps to know which cross streets to look for.
Calm, reef protected water holds up well year round, with summer bringing the flattest conditions and the warmest air.
