Kakahai'a Beach Park
Kaunakakai, HI
Kakahai'a sits at mile marker five and a half on Kamehameha V Highway, a small roadside park next to a wetland refuge that draws native waterbirds more reliably than it draws swimmers. The shoreline here is shallow and reef protected, fine for wading with kids but not built for anything more.
A convenient, easy stop for families passing through, but there's genuinely little to do beyond wading and watching birds, and locals treat it as a drive by rather than a destination.
How we score beachesBring binoculars if birds interest you at all. The adjacent National Wildlife Refuge is closed to public entry, but plenty of the endangered waterbirds it protects show up visible from the park itself.
A small roadside lot serves the park directly off Kamehameha V Highway, free and rarely full.
A short, flat walk from the lot leads to the shoreline, easy going the whole way.
Maui County's countywide leash law applies here.
Calm, reef protected water holds up for wading through most of the year, with no real seasonal swing that changes the experience much.
