Katherine Cove (Lake Superior Provincial Park)
Wawa, ON, Canada
Katherine Cove is a small day-use cove in Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario, right off Highway 17. Fine sand and shallow water make it the park's best spot for kids, and rocky points frame the cove. It's the kind of place you stop for ten minutes on a road trip and end up staying the afternoon.
A postcard Superior cove with soft sand steps from the highway, though it is a small cove and gets busy in summer.
How we score beachesBring water shoes if you want to explore the rocky points on either side of the cove.

A very short walk from the lot to the sand.
The shallows warm a little in July and August. Fall color along the highway usually peaks in late September.

New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
