Kawela Bay stays undeveloped in a way most North Shore beaches no longer are, a wide, tree lined bay with calm, shallow water protected by the point on either side. The walk in from the small pullout adds a layer of quiet most beaches this pretty have long since lost.

One of the last genuinely undeveloped, uncrowded bays on the North Shore, though the short walk in and lack of any facilities keep it from being an easy, spontaneous stop.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Walk the full curve of the bay early in the morning. It's one of the few spots left on this coast where you can genuinely have a long stretch of sand to yourself.

Parking

A small pullout along Kamehameha Highway near Turtle Bay Resort serves the bay, with a short walk in through trees.

Accessibility

A flat, shaded dirt path leads from the pullout to the sand, a few minutes' walk, not paved.

Weather & the best time to visit

Calm and shallow most of the year, since the points on both sides block much of the swell.
