Kitts Hummock
Dover, DE
Kitts Hummock takes its odd name from a transcription error, originally Kidds Hammock after the pirate Captain Kidd, who legend says buried treasure along this stretch of bay. Today the treasure is smaller, mostly sea glass and shells along a beach with only two public parking spots and nothing in the way of facilities.
The horseshoe crab sanctuary and pirate lore give it real character, but with only two public parking spots, it's a beach you happen upon rather than plan a trip to.
How we score beachesBring your own water and pack out everything you carry in. This is a true carry in, carry out beach with no trash cans or restrooms.
Only two public parking spots exist near the beach, so this is realistically a one or two car visit at a time.
Access is informal, a short walk from the road directly onto the sand.
Same seasonal pattern as the rest of the Delaware Bay shore, warming through summer within the June to November hurricane season, with horseshoe crab spawning each May and June.
