Koki Beach
Hana, HI
Koki Beach fronts the Hana coast with striking red cinder sand and a clear view out to Alau Island just offshore, dramatic enough that most people stop for photos before realizing the water itself is best left to experienced bodysurfers and local fishermen. A strong current and rip make this one to admire from the sand more than swim.
One of the most photogenic beaches on this coast, but the dangerous current means it's genuinely a look, don't swim kind of spot for most visitors.
How we score beachesThis beach has a real, well known rip current. If swimming is the plan for the day, Hamoa just up the road is the far safer choice.
A small roadside lot off Haneoo Road serves the beach, free and usually sufficient given how few people actually go in the water here.
A short, sandy walk from the lot to the beach, flat and easy, though the coarse cinder sand and steep drop off make water entry a different matter.
Currents run strong here year round, with winter swells adding even more risk to an already caution worthy beach.
