Kolekole Beach Park sits where Kolekole Stream tumbles out of the rainforest and drops into a river pool just before it reaches the rough Hamakua coast, the kind of place where the swimming actually happens upstream of the ocean rather than in it. A waterfall feeds the pool from above, and local families have been gathering here for generations, grilling under the pavilions while kids jump from the rocks.

A genuine multi generational gathering spot with a real waterfall pool to swim in, though the ocean side is dangerous enough that it's the river, not the sea, doing the work here.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Swim the freshwater pool near the falls rather than the ocean side. The surf along this stretch of Hamakua coast is genuinely dangerous, and the river pool is where the swimming actually happens.

Parking

A free lot sits just off Old Mamalahoa Highway and can fill on sunny weekends when families gather for cookouts.

Accessibility

A short, sometimes uneven path leads down from the lot to the river pool, manageable for most visitors but with some steps and slick rock near the water.

Weather & the best time to visit

This stretch of Hamakua coast sees rain in every season, and the waterfall and stream run fullest after heavy rain upcountry, though that can also mean faster current.
