Kure Beach
Kure Beach, NC
A few miles south of its livelier neighbor Carolina Beach, Kure Beach moves at a slower pace, anchored by a fishing pier and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher just down the road. The strand stays free and open year round, without the boardwalk crowds or the arcade noise.
Genuinely quieter than Carolina Beach next door with the aquarium as a bonus, though the trade is fewer restaurants and a shorter list of things to do after dark.
How we score beachesWalk the pier at sunrise before the fishing crowd shows up. It's the quietest hour on the whole strand, and the light off the water is worth the early alarm.
Beach access itself is free, though the town contracts paid parking at several public lots, worth having a card or app ready for.
Most accesses use a short boardwalk ramp over the dune. The beach itself is flat, wide sand that's manageable for strollers once you're past the ramp.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the beach anytime from October through March, and from 5pm to 9am the rest of the year, but never on the wooden boardwalk or the boardwalk business district.
Summer water climbs into the upper 70s alongside the same hurricane season that runs June through November down this whole stretch of coast. Fall brings the pier back to just the regulars, and the light gets noticeably softer.
