Lake Michigan Recreation Area
Manistee, MI
Lake Michigan Recreation Area is a Forest Service beach and campground south of Manistee, sitting right beside the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, the only designated wilderness in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. From the day-use lot you can walk north onto miles of undeveloped sand with nothing behind it but open dunes and jack pine.
Real wilderness beach with almost no development in sight, though it's a long drive down forest roads from anywhere.
How we score beachesWalk south from the lot into the wilderness boundary. Twenty minutes in, the footprints mostly stop and you'll have a dune bowl to yourself.
The Forest Service charges a small daily or weekly day-use fee at the recreation area.
Short paths and an overlook sit near the lot; the beach and wilderness beyond are soft, loose sand.
The campground runs from late spring into fall, and swimming is best from mid July. Evenings on the open dunes stay cool even in August, so pack a layer.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Beach
Empire, MI · Great Lakes
Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
