Lavallette Beach
Lavallette, NJ

Lavallette runs a strict beach in a town that otherwise feels loose and low key, a barrier island community with free street parking ending at nearly every beach block. Both the ocean and bay beaches require a badge, worn visibly, and the rule against dogs holds year round rather than easing up in the off season like most of its neighbors.
Free parking at nearly every block is a real advantage, but the year round dog ban is stricter than almost anywhere else on this part of the coast.
How we score beachesIf you're bringing a dog, skip the beach entirely and walk the boardwalk instead, once the lifeguards are off duty for the season. It's the one loophole in an otherwise firm no dogs policy.
Street parking is free at every beach block. Bayfront parking requires a ten dollar sticker from the badge office, enforced Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Streets run directly to the sand with flat, short walks at each beach block, no boardwalk or stairs involved on the ocean side.
Dogs aren't allowed on any Lavallette beach at any time. Dog walking is permitted on the boardwalk only in the off season, once lifeguard service ends.
Water warms into the low to mid 70s by August, typical for this stretch of the Barnegat Peninsula. The free street parking makes the shoulder seasons an easy time to walk the beach even without swimming in mind.
