Lea-Hutaff Island Beach

Lea-Hutaff Island is a four mile uninhabited barrier island between Topsail Island and Figure Eight Island, boat access only, with no roads, bridges, or facilities of any kind. It's one of the last undeveloped islands on the North Carolina coast and a designated Important Bird Area, with thousands of pelicans, terns, and herons nesting here by season.
A genuinely wild, undeveloped island with real ecological significance is rare this far south on the coast, though the boat-only access and seasonal closures mean it's a planned trip, not a spontaneous one.
How we score beachesCheck for posted nesting closures before picking a landing spot. Large sections shift off limits during sea turtle and shorebird nesting season, and the rules are strictly enforced.
No vehicle access to the island. Reach it by private boat, kayak, or paddleboard, or through a charter out of the Topsail or Hampstead area.
Entirely undeveloped, no paths or facilities. Landing spots and walkable stretches shift with the tide and current closures.
Best visited outside peak nesting season, roughly May through August, when large sections may be closed. The same June through November hurricane season affects conditions along the rest of this coast.
