Lewes Beach
Lewes, DE
Lewes Beach sits on the calm Delaware Bay side of town, a short walk from Savannah Road's shops and the Cape May Lewes Ferry terminal, with none of the surf or crowds that build up on the ocean side down in Rehoboth. The water stays gentle enough that locals bring toddlers here first, before anywhere else.
Calm water and an easy walk from town make it a real locals' spot for a quick dip, though the sand is narrow and there's no boardwalk scene to speak of.
How we score beachesWalk or bike in if you can. Parking along Savannah Road and the side streets is metered in season and gets tight by mid morning, especially right after a ferry has just unloaded.
Metered street parking runs along Savannah Road and nearby side streets in season, and fills up faster than you'd expect on ferry arrival days.
The beach is flat and sits right at the end of Savannah Road, an easy, level walk from the street with no dune or stairs to manage.
Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach strand only before 8am and after 6:30pm from May 1 through September 30, and on leash anytime the rest of the year.
Being on the bay rather than the open ocean, the water here warms a bit faster in spring and stays calmer through the June to November hurricane season. Late June through August is when it's warm enough for a full swim.
