Lime Kiln Point State Park
San Juan Island, WA
Lime Kiln Point State Park sits on the west side of San Juan Island, a rocky shoreline widely considered one of the best land based whale watching spots anywhere. Resident orca pods pass close enough in summer that people gather along the bluff trail with binoculars and just wait, and a working 1919 lighthouse stands watch over it all.
A flagship island destination with genuinely strong odds of seeing orcas from shore, easy public access, and a real lighthouse, hard to beat for a rocky, non-swim beach.
How we score beachesMay through September is the window for the resident J, K, and L orca pods. Outside those months this is still a scenic rocky shoreline worth a stop, just without the same odds of a sighting.
A Discover Pass is required for parking.
The trail to the lighthouse and whale watch overlook is wheelchair accessible. The shoreline itself is rocky basalt, not a sand beach.
Dogs are allowed on leash on the trails.
Spring through fall is the best window for whale activity. The park is accessible year round for the shoreline and lighthouse.
