Lion's Head Beach
Lion's Head, ON, Canada
Lion's Head Beach is the sandy village beach in Lion's Head, on the Georgian Bay side of Ontario's Bruce Peninsula. It runs along much of the town's shoreline, with calm, clear water that's safe for kids, a beach campground, and a replica wooden lighthouse by the harbour. The escarpment cliffs of the Lion's Head rise across the bay.
A calm, sandy village beach under the escarpment, though it's small next to Sauble on the other shore.
How we score beachesHike the Bruce Trail out to the Lion's Head lookout, then come back to the village beach for a swim.
Parking at the beach park near the harbour.
A short walk from the parking area to the sand.
July and August are the swimming months. Georgian Bay stays cool, but the shallow shore warms a little by late summer.

New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
